The first ever factory built four metre tractor in Australia arrived in Dalby, Queensland last November. The 320hp Challenger MT765B tractor was built at Challenger’s state of the art production facility in Jackson, Minnesota in North America.
This particular tractor is very similar to other Challenger MT765B track tractors, except it is built with extended rear trumpet housings and axles, as well as a longer hardbar that allows the undercarriage on the tractor to be moved and set on any gauge between three and four metres. This is very unique as most tractors in this horsepower class are built with wheels or tracks centres at two metres. Some can be extended to three metres; however none can be extended out as far as four metres, until now.
Tony Cullingworth, Area Sales Manager for AGCO Australia said that Controlled Traffic Farming (CTF) was popular on the Darling Downs. “CTF is the practice of using the same set of wheel tracks for all machinery, which in turn reduces compaction and improves yield” said Mr Cullingworth. “Three metre tractors are very popular, however they pose some problems for CTF as most modern harvesters are too wide and cannot be narrowed to three metres. Also, self propelled sprayers are much less stable when the wheel centres are set at three metres meaning often the tractor does not fit into the system”.
According to Mr Cullingworth, the ultimate CTF system would utilise four metre wheel centres for all machinery, especially on the Darling Downs where sorghum is grown as a summer crop on one metre rows and planters are 12m wide. “Due to the nature of the way the crop is grown, only wheel settings of two metres or four metres can be used between rows of sorghum. A tractor set at three metres will run over one row of crop”. Enter the solution, the Challenger MT765B set at four metres. This allows the tractor, harvester and sprayer to all utilise the same wheel tracks with no compromise.
McIntosh and Son Dalby Dealer Principal Tony Osborne said they see the four metre version of the MT765B as a real growth area. “For those who want to run a true CTF system in both winter and summer crops, a four metre tractor is the only solution. There is no other tractor in the world that can be set at four metre wheel centres that comes with a factory backed warranty”. The four metre MT765B comes standard with 2 years / 2000 hour warranty and the option of extended warranty up to 5 years / 5000 hours.
Combined with the ability to set the tracks four metres wide is the advantage of a track system over wheels. The track system gets a lot more traction than a tractor on single tyres due to the much larger ground contact area, making the Challenger MT765B the ultimate machine for improving productivity.
